My unit 3 project is about experimenting
and investigating how colour theory affects a photographers mind when carrying
out a fashion shoot.
To begin with, I started with simple
portrait shots in which where inspired by an artist called Martin Higgs to
build up the idea of Fashion. It also shows how make up is like a mask; It’s
like ‘gilding a lily’ which is when someone is trying to make something
beautiful even more beautiful.
Martin Higgs inspired both shoot 1 and 2
which were simple on the make-up but still under the idea of Fashion; Higgs is
a photographer who shoots fashion and portraiture.
However, as the shoot moved forward, I
found other artists that were more expressive with colour and the idea of
fashion which were Glen Krohn and Iain Crawford. Both of these photographers
inspired shoots 3, 4 and 5 mainly how did help towards the shoots that came
after. Both Glen Krohn and Iain Crawford are Fashion photographers; however
they differentiate slightly because Iain Crawford is a Fashion and colour
photographer whereas Glen Krohn is a Fashion and Beauty photographer. But, also Iain Crawford when shooting also
captures the kinetic movement of the model and captures the facial expressions
shown and produced by the model. This gives Crawford’s images a lot more
meaning and makes his photographs a lot more interesting. In my personal
opinion I think the kinetic movement of Crawford’s images make the images seem
more like Fashion, it’s like something you would see on a TV advert.
After viewing these artists work I
decided to take on board some of these key points and include them in my own
shoots for example; complimentary colours and facial expressions.
Below is an example of my work which has
been inspired by Crawford and Krohn.
Looking at my own piece of work in
relation to the two artists that inspired it I think it the make-up needs to be
improved because it isn't as dramatic and there isn't as much of it; mine seems
to be more precise whereas the artist’s work seems freer. Also the watch on the models arm seems quite
distracting.
The colours used are quite complimentary
however; the style of make-up used isn't the best. Further on in my project you
can see how the makeup gradually gets better and better because of the
experimenting and the improvement of knowledge.
Also the facial expression lacks a
little, I think it could do with more attitude. But, looking at other pieces of
my work that were a part of the same shoot, some facial expressions are more
noticeable and have more attitude than others. For example:
Again, moving on in my project I started researching for more inspiration towards my investigation, which I found using Pinterest. Pinterest is where I came across the idea of using UV paint; it provided me with various ideas in which were very inspirational. Pinterest was the inspiration towards shoots 6, 9 and 10.
Examples
of inspiration:
This idea
relates to my investigation and other research because it is still based on
colour and is still under the category fashion.
Below are examples of my own work in response to what I've found.
In my personal
opinion, I think my result is really good. They could possibly be improved by
making the splats of the paint bigger and maybe adding some fluorescent
clothing or jewellery.
Carrying on
from this, I think my project will move forward by going into double exposures
still carrying on colour as the main focus. I really like the UV paint, I think
it stands out compared to all of the other shoots, I think to improve it I
could experiment with how the makeup is applied.
I've found
that colour theory changes how a photographer thinks, majority of fashion
photographer’s tend to apply make-up that are complimentary colours. Majority
of the time the makeup is always matching.
